Chapter 18

The Flight of the Fugitive

He got on the plane with a manhunt behind him and a friend's face where no friend should have been — and no way to tell which one he was really running from.

7 September 2026

He made it through the terminal: past the cameras, past the uniforms, past the face on every screen that was starting to look like his. A boarding pass, a seat, a window pointed north toward the river and the sources and whatever was lit that night. For the length of a taxi down the runway he could almost believe he had gotten ahead of it.

Then there was Sun Liàng at the gate — his oldest friend, standing exactly where he had no reason to be, smiling like it was the most ordinary thing in the world.

Coincidence is a comfort you can only afford when nothing is hunting you. A man who has watched the same hand arrange a battlefield a thousand years ago learns to distrust a friendly face that turns up at the worst possible moment. And whatever rode his body through that holding cell did not stay behind at the security line. It buckled in beside him.

You can outrun a city. You cannot outrun the seat you are sitting in.

The Flight of the Fugitive

About this chapter

Chapter Eighteen closes the terminal doors and lifts Lü Yueguang off the ground, north toward the country that keeps pulling him into its past. The Flight of the Fugitive is a chapter about the illusion of escape — the hour in a sealed cabin when a man has done everything he can to put distance between himself and the wreckage, and still cannot say whether he is the one fleeing or the one being carried. It asks what it means to run when the pursuit is already on board with you, wearing your coat, answering to your name.
