Chapter 19

The Mistaken Shadow

He landed in a city already hunting him — and the manhunt didn't need to catch the right man to draw blood.

14 September 2026

The wheels touched down in Baotou to a city that already had his face memorized. Somewhere between the runway and the terminal doors, the description from the holding cell had caught up with him — a wanted man walking into the one place built to watch for wanted men. Sun Liàng’s smile at the gate had bought him nothing but a little more time in the air.

A thousand years ago he had learned what it costs to be the thing a whole province is looking for. He had not expected to learn it again in an airport, in this century, with his own passport in his pocket. The plains outside were the same dust that had swallowed armies once. They did not care what he called himself now.

He had gotten off the plane. He had not, in any way that mattered, landed anywhere safe.

The Mistaken Shadow

About this chapter

Chapter Nineteen drops Lü Yueguang into Jiuyuan with a manhunt already ahead of him. The Mistaken Shadow is a chapter about the violence of mistaken identity — what a search built on a blurry image does to the people caught in its path, and what it costs a man to watch it happen and say nothing. It asks whether the thing he is running from can be outrun at all, once it has started reaching for anyone who merely resembles him.
